About
Recently, a new mixed formulation (i.e. strain-stress based) has been developed for the analysis of fast structural dynamics problems. The governing equations describing the physics of the problem have been reformulated as a system of first order conservation laws resulting into a hyperbolic problem. This approach presents very interesting features capable of alleviating volumetric locking in the analysis of nearly incompressible dynamics applications, and also difficulties in bending dominated situations, typical in most structural dynamics applications. Perhaps most importantly, modern shock capturing techniques can be introduced so as to avoid spurious oscillations in the vicinity of sharp gradients (i.e. crash, impact).
In this work, potential of advanced numerical schemes such as, Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin method, Discontinuous Galerkin method, will be explored for the resolution of the above system of first order conservation laws. Crucially, various numerical implementations will be investigated to assess both computational speed and high order resolution. Results will be compared against existing Finite Volume and Taylor Galerkin strategies.
