About
The primary focus of my research to date has been the historical analysis of crime and deviance in the central and east European region and the former USSR, particularly the study of more organised forms of criminality; crime, deviance and underground movements/sub-cultures in communist regimes; the evolving relationship between state and society and experiences of ‘the everyday’ under communism. I am currently writing a book entitled "The Evolution of Criminal Networks in East Central Europe: the criminal underworld from the Brezhnev era to post-communism" which is a revised version of my PhD thesis. I have previously published articles relating to my research on crime in journals and edited collections.
I am also interested in the historical analysis of crime and criminal underworlds on a more broadly comparative and transnational basis.
Some of my more recent research also relates to the historical analysis of borderlands in the east European region, in connection with crime but also in relation to broader issues of nationalism, state-building and identity construction in modern Europe. I am currently researching the history of the Chodsko region on the Czech-German border.
I also write an online blog entitled 'The View East' which you can read here @ http://thevieweast.wordpress.com/
