Thesis Title: Ancient Greek Generalship and Military Leadership

Tracey Rihll

About

I am currently in the final year of my PhD at Swansea University examining leadership, generalship, and lightly armed troops in the ancient Greek world. I am seeking to present a new and practical view of Greek warfare which focuses rather less on rules and fair play and more on practical realities and human nature, as well as bringing the true role and importance of lightly armed troops to the fore.

In additon to studying the works of Herodotus, Thucydides etc I have been greatly aided in my understanding of Greek warfare by having played rugby for eight years, and having studied jiu-jitsu and judo for nearly ten years.

Other interests include:

* Aeneas Tacitus.
* Historiography, specifically the influence of politics and international relations on scholarship.
* Fighting and violence in the ancient world.
* Individual and group morale in politics and warfare.
* Simone Weil.
