Darwin, God, and the Meaning of Life: The Philosophical Implications of Evolutionary Theory

Where: Agora, Brynmill Scout Hall, Bryn Road, Brynmill, Swansea When: 5th February 2010, 10am - 12pm

Can someone who accepts that we evolved continue to believe in God? Or does the suffering entailed by natural selection imply that there could be no God? What is the purpose of life? Does evolutionary theory imply that life has no ultimate purpose? Have we overvalued human life and undervalued the lives of (other) animals? In this talk, I address these and other questions raised by Darwin’s theory of evolution. I argue that the theory supports a view of a godless universe, devoid of ultimate purpose or moral structure… but that we can live a good life and a happy life even within the confines of such a view.

Refreshments from 6pm

Two hundred years after his birth, the world is still reeling at the ideas of Charles Darwin.  Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection has provoked more debate, more consternation, and more fear among the general public than any other theory in the history of science.  Friends of the theory and foes alike have worried about three main things:

(1) that evolutionary theory undermines the existence of God;

(2) that it suggests that life has no ultimate meaning or purpose; and

(3) that it challenges and threatens traditional moral values.

This talk will consider these and other claimed implications of Darwin's theory.
